25 Goals on My 25th Birthday for the Next 25 Years

Well, it’s my 25th birthday today, and in the spirit of starting this new blog I thought it would be fun to have a list of 25 goals I would like to accomplish.

But before I get to the list, I’d like to thank all my wonderful friends who came out and supported the inaugural Change for Kids Junior Council’s Penguin Party, which was held this past Friday night at the fantastic Bowery Hotel. The black tie event sold out in 27 hours and there were 500 guests who helped raise a ton of money for local NYC schools. I was lucky enough to don a penguin suit for an hour and had a great time at the event. Also, big thanks to everyone who also made it to my birthday party Saturday night (especially those of you who made it to both events - I know that seeing me two nights in a row is a big, and often underwhelming, commitment).

Now back to the 25 goals - these items are in no particular order and are a mix of personal and professional goals. From time to time I may stop back to see how I’m doing, and hopefully I can check them all off my list in my next 25 years.

  1. Getting involved in NYC startup community
  2. Travel to Southern Europe (Italy, Spain, etc)
  3. Learn basics of how to code
  4. Go to 2014 World Cup in Braziil
  5. Go to the gym at least 3x a week
  6. Go to Goa with family on next India trip
  7. Take majority of money out of the stock market to invest in promising new startups
  8. Keep weight below 175 to 180 pounds
  9. Get married and have a family
  10. Go to a Super Bowl
  11. Buy (or rent) a beach or lake house
  12. Start / co-found my own company
  13. Have at least 1,000 twitter followers
  14. Go back to UVA at least once a year for a sporting event
  15. Get involved with an education based charity/non-profit at a senior level
  16. Consistently write on this (or another) blog
  17. Get season tickets to football or basketball team
  18. Keep in touch more often with extended family members and high school / college friends
  19. Throw fun parties several times a year
  20. Watch less crappy TV
  21. Start playing pickup basketball again
  22. Keep my room and work area clean and organized
  23. Wake up before noon on the weekends and earlier during the week (I need to start going to the gym in the morning)
  24. Treat Yo Self to nice things. I’m pretty stingy about buying stuff (other than booze) for myself
  25. Learn something new every day (cheesy as hell…I know)

If you have any fun suggestions, feel free to add them in the comments.

Welcome

It’s been quite a long time since I’ve written anything for myself. I used to enjoy writing in my politics and history classes my first few years at UVA, but in the last 5 years once I started at the Comm School and been in Investment Banking I haven’t set aside any time to write (apart from creating a million iterations of powerpoint decks). I also am not embarrassed to say I used to have a Livejournal back in high school that I would occasionally update and link to in my AIM profile.*

In any case, I’ve been thinking about starting a blog for a while to use as an outlet to organize and express my thoughts, and I think that Tumblr is a great tool to help me accomplish this goal.

My passions are sports (UVA football and basketball, the Bulls, the 49ers, and Michigan Wolverines), entrepreneurship / startups, and education (particularly financial education in schools). My posts will likely focus on these items as well as a variety of different topics such as current events, things going on in my life, my random opinions on cool stuff that interest me, and some occasional attempts at comedy which will likely go flat.

My goal for this blog is to develop my writing and critical thinking skills and I hope an ancillary benefit will be to provide something that will one day be interesting and useful to others.

*I can’t seem to track down my old Livejournal account - I’d love to look back at some of my old high school posts to see how stupid they were / I was.
